Title: TRIP UPDATE – SUNDAY NIGHT – May 2, 2010 | Date Posted: 2010-05-02 |
Good evening! We’ve had another fun day on our band trip. After my update last night, our ship began experiencing some strong winds and 10-12 foot waves. Needless to say, we had quite a few of us that began to feel the effects of the rocking of the ship. However, Dr. Mayeaux was armed with loads of Dramamine and began going door to door distributing to those in need. After a couple of hours, everyone began to feel better and by 11:00 pm the rocking had somewhat subsided. The kids (and adults) enjoyed themselves at the midnight Mexican buffet and Lido Deck Dance Party. Many of the students seemed to sleep in this morning and eventually made their way out to the pool and buffet areas around 11:00 am. I think they’ve enjoyed just hanging out around the ship and doing a variety of activities with their friends today. We met as a group for a debarkation meeting at 3:00 pm today and were given information regarding how the group is going to get off the ship. It appears that we will be one of the early debarkations as we were given the #3 tags (there are usually at least 16). Our captain has told us that the oil spill is still about 40 miles from the coast so we will be going east of the spill and then skirting the coastline to get into Mobile. This means that we may be debarking a little later…our Festivals at Sea representative told me that it will probably be between 9:30 and 10:00 am before we will be able to exit the ship. I was impressed again with our kids today as many of them chose to dress up (some in coat & ties, nice dresses) tonight for dinner. It has been wonderful to watch our students grow during this experience. We’ve already had dinner and our next event is a “Beatle’s Revue” in the main show lounge at 8:45 pm. The buses should be arriving at Milton HS between 12:00 & 1:00 pm. Again, I just can’t express to you how proud I am of our kids and what a fun time that they are having on this trip. Thank you for your continued support of the Mighty Black & Gold Band. See you guys back in Florida tomorrow afternoon!

Title: BAND TRIP SATURDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE – May 1, 2010 | Date Posted: 2010-05-01 |
Hola! Just wanted to let you know that our ship is leaving Cozumel right now and everyone is onboard! We had a wonderful time in Cozumel today…it was quite windy, partly cloudy, and in the lower 90’s. The Chankanaab Group got to see plenty of colorful fish while snorkeling. The Playa Mia enjoyed a relaxing day at the beach. The surf was kinda rough and the kids who signed up weren’t able to parasail because of the wind…however, those with permission slips were allowed to ride the waverunners which they thought were awesome! The Island Tour was treated to great surf on the east side of the island and really seemed to enjoy the tour along with the shopping. They were even offered Tequila samples at the Tequila Factory and the students informed the tequila cowboy that they were in high school and would not accept the samples (Go kids!). Our shopping group got a full day of shopping in. We’ve got dinner in 15 minutes and then a deck party and Mexican Buffet at 11:00 pm. Curfew tonight is 1:00 am. Tomorrow we spend a fun-filled day at sea before returning home on Monday. All of the kids are doing great…little sicknesses that are usually resolved within about 2-3 hours…but nobody has been confined to their rooms because of illness. I just want for each of you to know that our kids have been outstanding! I had several people today in Cozumel compliment the maturity, politeness, and behavior of our group. I am so proud of them thus far and I hope that you are too! Time for dinner…although the kids had the chance to go the buffet tonight I’m seeing many of them dressed up to go back to the dining room! Seems they are enjoying being waited on…LOL! I’ll update you guys tomorrow. Hasta manana!

Title: BAND TRIP - FRIDAY NIGHT UPDATE – 4/30/10 | Date Posted: 2010-04-30 |
Here is the Friday night update…from the southern Gulf of Mexico. Today was a great day as we spent the entire day at sea. Our group awoke to a wake-up call at 7:00 am this morning. We then had a rehearsal from 8:30 am until 9:30 am in the Universe Lounge. After the rehearsal the kids had the rest of the morning and early afternoon to enjoy the activities around the ship. One of our chaperones (Wayne Swager) won the “Hairy Chest Competition” out by the pool (he has the 14k gold plastic ship on a stick to prove it!). The group then met at 3:30 pm in their formal wear and we had a group photo taken in the atrium area of the ship (which, of course, drew a crowd). After the photo session, we set-up in the Universe Lounge for our 4:30 pm performance. The kids performed very well although the ship was moderately rocking the entire time. We had a nice size audience and even some people from Milton and the NW Florida area. Captain Costi (the ship’s captain) came down for the end of our performance and had a picture made with the group on stage. We discovered that our ship’s captain was a trumpet player during his early years in Italy (See…I told you that music students go on to be successful people!) and had heard us rehearsing an Italian aria that morning while he was in his shower which was located right above the stage. After the performance, we enjoyed a great dinner with lobster tail, jumbo black tiger shrimp, prime rib and many other great dishes. The students are enjoying the ship’s activities until 11:30 pm curfew. We’ve had about 12 students who have experienced slight seasickness but each of those have bounced back after receiving medicine. Tomorrow we will be arriving in Cozumel and the excursion teams are prompted and ready to go! In closing, I want all of you to know that I am very proud of our kids for their performance but especially for their outstanding behavior! They were very well dressed and seemed to really enjoy the Captain’s Formal Dinner tonight. They have all conducted themselves as young men and young women and we have received many compliments from other guests onboard the ship regarding their maturity. Our kids are doing an outstanding job of representing their families, our school, and our community! In closing, let me thank you again for allowing your kids to attend this awesome adventure. I’ll update you tomorrow night!

Title: Band Trip Update – Day 1 (Thursday night @ 8:40 pm) | Date Posted: 2010-04-29 |
Bon Voyage! We got everybody onboard the Carnival Fantasy this afternoon around 12:45-1:00 pm. We had to sit on the buses for 1 hour at the port while waiting for them to allow us to pull up and unload, but once we got off the bus the check-in process was fairly quick. The people at registration seemed somewhat confused about how to check-in the students who were 17 and below because they didn’t have a “Fun pass” and many of them also needed to set-up an onboard cash account, but after their manager came through and explained it, then the process moved pretty well.
Students & Parents seemed very excited as they began to explore the ship, enjoy the buffets, play in the pool and water slides. We had an emergency evacuation drill around 3:45 pm and set sail immediately after the drill. We only had one incident where “AM-11” had his room key and his driver’s license fall out of his neck wallet and fly overboard during the drill. We have been able to get him a room key and we are working on getting the school to fax a copy of his school id to the ship so that it will hopefully work to get him off of the boat on Monday. We had a 5:00 pm Orientation Meeting with our onboard representative Mary and with the security officer. At this point they told the students that they wouldn’t have to dress up for dinner and could wear whatever clothes that they wore onboard for the first night. I was proud of our kids because I didn’t see a single student who didn’t go change into their dress clothes…the group looked very classy! Dinner was great!
As I type this update, many students are passing my room headed upstairs to hit the pool and hot tubs. The ship hasn’t been rocking too bad although we are skirting the Alabama/NW Florida coast to go around the oil spill (according to the captain). Everybody seems to be doing well and having a blast! I’m going to check many of our teens into their Teen Club once it opens at 9:00 pm and there is “Welcome Aboard” show in the Universe Lounge at 10:30 pm.
Tomorrow morning we’ve got to go downstairs to get our instruments and then rehearse in the Universe Lounge from 8:30-9:30 pm. Our concert will take place tomorrow afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Tomorrow night is also Captain’s Dinner (formal night)…with all the lobster tail, jumbo tiger shrimp, and prime rib that we can eat! We hope to enjoy a fun-filled day at sea before arriving in Cozumel on Saturday morning. Anyway, I’ll keep you guys updated each evening! Thanks for allowing me to bring your kids on this wonderful adventure!
